Genesis 5 names and their meanings

I got the meaning of the names from Wikipedia: List of Biblical Names and the last part from bible-codes.org.

Genesis
Chapter 5:
Adam – earthy, mankind
Seth – put, who put, fixed, appointed
Enosh – mortal man
Kenan – buyer, owner; sorrow is born
Mahalalel (Mahaleleel) – praising God; the Glory of God
Jared – he who descended; he who shall rule; shall come down
Enoch – dedicated; disciplined; instructing that
Methuselah – when he dies it shall be sent; his death shall bring judgment; his death shall bring (tradition says that he died seven days before the beginning of the Great Flood. In the Book of Jasher, God promised that he would not be killed with the unrighteous.)
Lamech (father of Noah, died five years before the flood) – poor, made low; those in despair
Noah – rest, consolation; comfort and rest
Shem — name; renown
Ham – hot; heat; brown

Pretty neat when you think that God used the names in the geneology of Noah and his ancestors to teach about the coming of the Lord Jesus.

  1. It’s so amazing how the stories, names, numbers and so much more in the old testament point to Christ and the church.
