Cloth yourself with Jesus

Genesis 3:21 The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.

Notice how caring God was even after they sinned. He could have eliminated them right away but He didn’t. He had to make it harder for them so that they might think about what they had done and be prevented from rebelling further (Genesis 3:16-19). But He clothed them. This is something man tried to do with the fig leaves (Genesis 3:7), but was wholly inadequate. Now God gives them garments of skin. Why did He do that?

Well, first He obviously cares about them. But there are other considerations. In order to make the garments of skin, He had to kill some animals–probably in front of Adam and Eve. It showed them that death was necessary to make their clothes. It showed them the consequences of sin without killing them. These animals (Adam named them) were probably friends with Adam and Eve. It hurt them to see these animals die. It showed them that they must make sacrifices for their sin. And thirdly, it showed them a future event. One day, a sacrifice of woman’s seed would be made — His name was Jesus Christ. This would be the final sacrifice that would cleanse them and other people who believed of their sins. It showed early man that we must clothe ourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 13:14). They did not know who He was yet but they had the symbol of His sacrifice on their bodies.
